# Pacer and Fig

Pacer brings back Fig's terminal autocomplete popover for macOS, from the same open spec library, without an account, a cloud, or AI.

## In short

Fig was a terminal autocomplete app for macOS. Amazon acquired it in 2023 and shut it down in 2024, and its features moved into Amazon Q Developer CLI. Pacer starts from the Fig code that Amazon released as open source, and keeps the part most people used every day: the popover at the cursor.

## What stays the same

- **The popover**: It opens next to the cursor while you type and lists subcommands, options, and arguments, each with a short description.
- **The spec library**: Pacer uses the open Fig spec library, with completions for more than 700 command-line tools. Specs you wrote for Fig work in `~/.config/pacer/specs`.
- **The keys**: Use ↑ ↓ to move, ⏎ or ⇥ to insert, and esc to close.

## Where they differ

- **No account**: Fig had cloud features that needed you to sign in. Pacer has no account and no server.
- **No AI**: Pacer has no AI features. Everything it suggests comes from spec files and from commands it runs in your own shell.
- **Smarter local suggestions**: Changed files first, branches with their last commit, ranking by what you run in each repo, a guard for risky commands, and descriptions for your repo's scripts.
- **One setup**: Pacer supports zsh on Apple silicon Macs, in Ghostty, iTerm2, or Terminal. Fig supported more shells and terminals.

## Which to choose

If you miss Fig's popover and use zsh in Ghostty, iTerm2, or Terminal, Pacer gives it back, and it keeps working without a company's servers. If you need bash, fish, or another terminal, Pacer does not support them yet. See the [home page](/) for features and requirements.
